My heart felt condolences on hearing of the news of the deaths of Mr and Mrs Dighton. They were both a lovely couple. I fondly remember Mr Dighton and his appetite for learning French! He would always find a way to practice with me. He had a very compassionate heart and was a person to turn to in times of trouble. He loved the boys he taught, and was a source of support to his staff. Alefiyah Jiwanji (former French teacher at Elmhurst School)

Mr Dighton was a lovely person, he always used to tell really funny jokes about himself and knew how to inspire elmhurst school boys like myself. I am sorry to hear of his passing away.

I am devastated to hear about the tragic deaths of Barry and Elizabeth Dighton. While I was never taught by Mrs Dighton, Mr Dighton was an inspiration to me during my years at Elmhurst. He taught me English during my fifth year and made so much effort to make sure that I felt at home at the school when I joined in the autumn of 1996. Ultimately his teaching is one of the main reasons I have been able to progress successfully through GCSEs, A-Levels and on to University. A tragic loss, he will be missed by all those who knew him. Mr Dighton you made all our lessons fun. I enjoyed playing cricket when you were there because you were so inspirational .You always knew how to get the best from us. How you made us believe in ourselves, how you made us laugh and how we had so much respect for you no one else will ever do. You were a great teacher. You will always be very dear to me. Thank you for all you have taught me and thank you for be the best teacher one could ever have. I am sad and It is so difficult for me to understand this is how you and your wife had to say goodbye to us all. You two are gone but you will not be forgotten. I will miss you and Mrs. Dighton. You were were both so kind to me and I loved coming for my tutor classes. I always came away feeling good knowing that I had learnt something. You were funny and gave me so much encouragement and improved my confidence. At least I know you will be in heaven with Mrs.Dighton. Love Cal xx

A truly tragic end to the lives of two wonderful and inspired teachers.. They gave so much to Elmhurst and to all the boys who passed through the school during their many years of service. Committed and inspiring and with such a wonderful relationship with the boys; I have such very happy memories of Mr & Mrs Dighton during my son Martin’s time at Elmhurst. My thoughts are with their family, friends and former colleagues at this dreadfully sad time. I now live in Wiltshire but would be grateful if you let me know if any memorial service, etc is planned. Martin left Elmhurst some 12 years ago but the start that Elmhurst and Mr & Mrs Dighton gave him was invaluable. He is now doing a PhD in Aeronautics at Imperial College, London.

we would like to express our deep sorrow at the death of Mr Barry and Liz Dighton our son Jack Rogers attended Elmhusrt for 7 years, in that time we got to know Barry well I served on the PTA for 2 years and Barry was always a joy to work with. Our son Jack always refers to Mr Dighton as the best teacher he ever had a real inspiration to him. Jack has always shown a flair for English and this is truly down to Barry Dighton in those early informative years. Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time. Mr Dighton bumped into my parents a few months ago, while they were walking their dog, and even 18 years after I had left the school, he still remembered their first names and asked after me too. I am sure many other people will share similar experiences. His teaching stood me (and undoubtedly everyone else who had the same privilege) in excellent stead for secondary school and life in general. On a personal note, I count him as a major influence on my sense of humour, too. His groan-inducing jokes were legendary! He and his wife were highly respected and inspirational and will be greatly missed.

Our condolances to everyone past and present connected to Elmhurst who knew Barry and Liz . They were inspirational teachers and we will never forget how Barry helped our son Richard when he first started at Elmhurst when he was nearly 6. Richard was close to becoming a school phobic after a really bad start to his education at our local primary school but thanks to Barry and everyone at Elmhurst he started to "enjoy" life again and progress through to University and beyond. A tragic loss and may they rest in peace. Sue,Sid and Richard

Sorry to contact you under such circumstances however, I am a former pupil and attended Elmhurst for six years while Mr and Mrs Dighton were teachers they meant a great deal to myself, my former Elmhurst peers and our parents who had a great deal of involvment with the school, many of whom I am still in contact with we were wondering if you knew of any public memorial service that is going to be held for them that we could attend? Kind regards.

Dear Secretary, I am a former Elmhurst pupil from a very long time ago (1983-1990), and was deeply shocked and saddened to hear the recent news. I was taught by, and was very fond of, both Mr and Mrs Deighton. I was wondering if there was going to be any kind of public memorial/funeral service that I might be allowed to attend, in order to pay my last respects? I am still in touch with a number of Old Boys from my year who might also like to know about it, and I am happy to spread the word around to them. I would very much appreciate it if you could let me know. Thank you very much indeed.

As a former pupil, who was fortunate enough to have been taught by Mr Dighton and play under his coaching at both football and cricket, I just wanted to express my deep sadness at their tragic passing. Mr Dighton was a warm, bubbly man whose teaching and coaching manner was both good and interesting. Mrs Dighton was much the same. My thoughts go out to their friends and family and may they rest in peace. Warmest regards Muazzin Mehrban ( Elmhurst pupil, years 5 and 6, 1996-1998)

To all at Elmhurst We are so saddened and shocked to hear about Mr & Mrs Dighton and are sending our thoughts and support to everyone at the school. Oliver is, understandably, in pieces as no doubt are all the boys, teachers and staff who had the good fortune to know Mr & Mrs Dighton What a privilege it has been to know them both and how lucky Oliver has been to have their guidance Their influence is strongly with him and always will be: he said this morning that he would rather have known them and be hurting now than to never have known them. Please tell me if there is anything we can do to support the school through this tragedy And when the time comes to give our condolences – in a book or some other memorial – please let us know as the Selby family feels proud to have known Mr & Mrs Dighton and have the utmost respect for all that they did for Elmhurst School and the Croydon community Sending our thoughts and support to you all Katherine, David, Oliver & Thalia

My heartfelt condolences to anyone who knew Mr and Mrs Dighton. I was at Elmhurst from 1981-88 and remember both teachers as clearly as if it were yesterday. I was kindergarten prefect in my final year, so I got to know Mrs Dighton well during that time, and admired her kindness and patience with the younger children. Mr Dighton was an inspirational teacher and I shall always remember him teasing me like a father would a son. It breaks my heart to think of what has happened; both will be much missed and never forgotten. Please let me know of any memorial services as I would very much like to attend.

Hello Elmhurst My son Ryan Neil Kelman attended Elmhurst School having left sometime ago (he was 23 this year) moving on to Dulwich College; because of this I felt the need to write to express my condolence about the very sad news I have just heard pertaining to Mr and Mrs Dighton whom I had to pleasure to know whilst Ryan was at Elmhurst. I am at a loss as to what to say but just wanted to express this to the school who was responsible and assisted my son and others for the next stage of their educational life thanks specifically to the commitment, dedication and support of Mr and Mrs Dighton. Regards Mrs Pauline Kelman and Ryan Kelman

My 2 sons were at Elmhurst , 1996-2002, and we have all been shocked and deeply saddened by the tragedy of their deaths. I am sure there are many others who, like us, would like to have somewhere to pay our respects and tributes to a couple who were such a positive influence in our sons lives. I was wondering whether Elmhurst would be setting up a page on the website for this? Mr D and Elmhurst are almost synonomous in our minds and it would seem a fitting place for them to be remembered. If this is not happening, could you please direct me to someone to whom our respects could be directed. Yours faithfully, Hilary Higgins

I just felt I had to drop you all a line and say how sorry I was to hear the terrible news today. Mr Dighton was, in my opinion and experience of dealing with a large number of schools, one of the best headmasters around. Whenver I came to Elmhurst, it was different to every other school in the way the pupils respected adults. They would always move to one side to let you through. That is rare in this day and age, even in private schools. I attribute that to Mr Dighton and the way he led the school. You can learn a lot about a school from the way pupils react to visitors. I dont think I can add much else to what will have already been said but would be grateful if you would pass on our best wishes to everyone at the school at this time. Take care Scott

Dear All at Elmhurst, Im an old boy, who left in 1989. Ive just read the terribly sad news of the death of Mr and Mrs Dighton, my deputy headmaster for the entire duration of my schooling at Elmhurst. Not only was he an amazingly bright and warm teacher, but, genuinely one of the funniest people Ive ever had the joy to encounter. To Mr D., I was always Reekie, even in the cards and updates I received from him as recently as this past Christmas. My thoughts, and those of my parents, are with you all at this horribly difficult time. Sincerely, Tarik ORegan (Elmhurst School: 1984-1989), Mr & Mrs ORegan

I was greatly saddened to hear the news of his and Lizs passing in such appalling circumstances. If you have any details of the funeral or a memorial service, I would be very grateful if they could be passed on to me as he left a very positive and great impression on me which has helped me through my life. I was not sure who else to contact, I and my two brothers where students at Elmhurst from 1986 until my youngest brother left in 1999. We where all students of both Barry and Elizabeth. We would very much like to attend their funerals but have no idea where to get the information for the date when it becomes available. I understand that both the Dightons had retired but if you do find out the dat for the funeral could you by any chance let me know. Also i am not sure if any of my other teachers are still at the school, i am thinking of Mr and Mrs Farrell or Mrs Wayman, Mrs Lincoln, if i could get any of their contact details perhaps they could help me too. I am extremely devastated about this news as im sure many of the current staff are, and would very much like a chance to pay my last respects to two people without whom i would certainly not be where i am today.

We are deeply shocked and saddened about the sudden and unexpected death of Mr and Mrs Dighton. Both were wonderful teachers and and it was a great privilege to know them. Our son, Anand, who had 6 very good years of education in Elmhurst was lucky to have had them as teachers and they were a great source of inspiration to him. We will never forget Mr. Dightons sense of humour. They will be greatly missed. May God give them eternal rest and may their souls rest in peace.

We are so shocked and saddened to hear the awful news about Mr & Mrs Dighton. Our Son Jonathan attended Elmhurst during 1981 - 1988 and was very happy there. Mr Dighton was a great influence and indeed an inspirational teacher, he always managed to say something in a teasing way to make the boys feel at ease. Jonathan has often spoken of them both over the years and is absolutely stunned by this awful news. We would very much like to attend any memorial service that is being held.

We were shocked and deeply saddened to hear about Mr and Mrs Dighton. We only knew them a short time before they retired but they gave so much time and energy to Elmhurst and Mr Dighton was a brilliant headmaster - clever, perceptive and witty. Mr and Mrs Dighton were a true inspiration to many. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends and with all of the staff at Elmhurst who are doing such a great job of keeping some sense of normality for all the boys during this difficult time. My eldest son Deinma who is now in Year 5 joined the school half-way through Year 1, just a few months before Mr Dighton retired. Despite the little time spent with Mr Dighton, he nevertheless cherishes fond memories of his jokes and remarkable storytelling, in particular, one about a “Mr. Chilly Billy who lived in a fridge ...” which always made him laugh. Our caring thoughts are with you all.

We are enormously privileged to have known Barry and Elizabeth Dighton. Quite simply, they made a huge and positive impact on Oliver. Their care, guidance, humour and affection for him from the tender age of four made his early years of education at Elmhurst School very memorable, enjoyable and valuable. He will carry their example with him for life. We have many fond memories - most of them involving kindness and wit! - that helped shape his time at primary school. The loss of such wonderful and kind people in such a tragic way is beyond comprehension. Our thoughts are with everyone who knew them and especially to all their friends and colleagues at Elmhurst who embraced their ethos and helped carry this through to all the boys day in, day out. Their tragic deaths cannot take away all that they gave to all whom they knew. Let us keep alive their legacy of kindness, compassion and fairness. Katherine, David, Oliver & Thalia Selby

We would like to extend our condolences to all who knew Mr and Mrs Dighton. We are terribly shocked. Mr Dighton was a fantastic leader, an excellent teacher and one who endeavoured to empower all the boys he taught. He took an interest in each boy, equally he ensured that he became familiar with them. He was witty, fair and charismatic. The boys enjoyed being in his presence and it was always pleasing to see and hear how much respect the boys and the parents had for him. He knew how to get their attention. Mrs Dighton was quite and very caring, she was always there to support her husband. These two special people will always be remembered for what they were able to give not only our son but to all the other boys they had contact with. They will surely be missed. Mr Dighton, with the staff at Elmhurst under your leadership and guidance, you gave our son, Robert, the confidence, courage and pride to try to succeed in everything he does. You personally helped him secure his place at the school he dreamt of attending but was never confident that he could. Your belief in him has given him the self-belief and opportunity to continue to develop into the quietly self assured young man we now see emerging. We all appreciate just how lucky he was to have been an "Elmhurst boy" in your care during his early and formative years. We will always be grateful to you and you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace knowing you were loved, respected and admired by pupils and parents alike.

This is truly a sad sad time. We still cannot comprehend such a loss. Mrs Dighton taught our elder son, Jordan in Kindergarten and Mr Dighton taught him English in year 5. For our son Curtis, he encouraged and supported him during cricket nets practice and inspired him at school. He was an excellent head and an inspirational man who always seemed to know how to handle a child who was not happy about anything and make them laugh. He was a great public speaker and had a great sense of humour. The quiz nights will be remembered with fond memories as Mr and Mrs Dighton did a sterling job and above everything else, Mr Dighton was the one who made Elmhurst into a quite special place and his relationships with the boys, especially when we first visited the school back in 1999, helped us decide that this school and its environment and led by Mr Dighton, was the one to send our sons too. Curtis and Jordan both feel totally shocked and are slowly coming to terms with the news but as has been said, we still cherish and will always have the happy, funny, purposeful and passionate memories of Mr Dighton. He was truly unique. Mr and Mrs Dighton, Thank you both.

To Mr and Mrs Dighton, Thank you so very much for all the hard work and effort that you put into Elmhurst when I was there. You both were fantastic and enjoyable people to know and that will never go away. I would now like to say something about Mrs Dighton: Mrs Elizabeth Dighton was possibly the best reception teacher anyone could have ever wished for and I am sure well, no, I know that everyone was so disheartened to see such a lovely, caring and attentive lady go from us. Now for Mr Dighton: Mr Barry Dighton was the BEST headmaster I could have ever have dreamed of to start me off at such a thrilling school as Elmhurst. I myself was at the Palace match and it was very hard but also easy to stand up for one minutes silence. Everyone at the game stood up in memory of you and I could only hope that I could have seen two people sitting in those empty seats. May my heart and love go out to both of you. R.I.P Mr and Mrs Dighton and also Danny a really good guy in the heart and I only wish he had not done such a tragic thing. Hope you get this message some day With my love and true belief that you are still living some where even though it may not be Earth. Ollie Selby

My three brothers and I attended Elmhurst in the 1980s and we all had the priveledge of being taught by Mr. and Mrs. Dighton. I emailed Mr. Dighton a few years ago......14 years after I had left the school and I was sincerely humbled by the level of detail he was able to recollect each of us. He was also the funniest, most captivating English teacher I ever had. I was lucky enough to have Mrs. Dighton as my Kindergarten teacher; she was always very kind and patient with all her students. Their presence and positive influence will be deeply missed. They are quite simply irreplaceable.

Truly heartfelt condolences to everyone. Just wanted to try to sum up in another way, what the Dightons meant to us - Together, you were, in life and in death; one you were, till your last breaths You met, you touched, you changed You broke down society’s chains You saw no colour; you walked in honour Touching lives, countless in number You blessed with your jest, your support and your love; and treasure we shall, as long as we are living, your gifts, which are now part of our being. On our son’s first day at school, he was both excited and apprehensive. I remember clearly Mr. Dighton greeting us warmly at the door; he then spoke cheerfully to our son, held his little hand and led him inside. Our son walked beside him and never looked back once. At that instant, we became confident our son would be happy at the school. In that first year, we found Mr. and Mrs. Dighton to be everything that had already been written about them: Mr. Dighton was inspirational; charismatic; kind; funny; thoughtful and an exceptional headmaster, mentor and teacher. He also had an incredible memory; I was surprised at how much he remembered about us after just one short meeting which took place months before. We were sorry Mr. & Mrs. Dighton took retirement when they did, but pleased that they were still around for the boys. Our son continued to send them a Christmas card each year, and one would be returned, containing not only a message but also a hand drawn cartoon labelled with our son’s name, making it so special for him. Now that was Mr. Dighton! He always had time for the boys and made everyone feel special. Like everyone who knew Mr. and Mrs. Dighton, we were deeply shocked and very saddened by the news of their passing. Our condolences go to their family, all their friends and the school. They were untimely taken away from us but their legacy will remain forever with our boys. May they rest in peace. Our thoughts are also with Danny, whom our son grew very fond of in the last 4 years, may he find peace one day.

It was a great shock for me to hear about the terrible news. Mr and mrs Dighton have looked after and taught at Elmhurst school right from the first day. I have so many fond memories of both of them. And it was also an honour to be the last Head Boy under Mr and Mrs Dighton right before they retired. R. I. P Mr And Mrs Dighton, you were both great influences in all of our lives

RIP Mr and Mrs Dighton. What you gave to the boys we will never forget. Kabir is devestated by this tradgey as are we all. All those funny jokes, special names, and doing the boogey woogey are priceless memories. Kabir has achieved so much and this is all to do with the school and the guidance that Mr and Mrs Dighton gave. The heavens are a brighter because these two souls now reside there. You may have gone but you will never be forgotten

Its with great regret that we write this message at this time. Mr and Mrs Dighton were very special people and as a family we feel very very lucky to have known them. Mr and Mrs Dighton made every boy feel special but also had the wonderful gift of making parents feeling special too. Both made a major impact on shaping the lives of Leshon and Dante and as parents we dedicate the future success of our boys to them. Leshon and Dante have been inconsolable. Heaven has two worthy angels! Rest in Peace. Love the Pitters Family

I am extremeley sadden to hear of this tragedy. Mr Dighton was very much the gentleman. He amazed me how he knew every boy in his school by their full names. He was fair, witty and gentle. Always wanting the best for all his boys. Helping them achieve the best they could for themselves. I will never forget Mr Dighton and I will be eternally gratefully for the big part he played in helping mould my son in to a fine young man. He has touched many, many lives. Rest in peace.

Mr Dighton was kind and fair, he was funny and smart. I only knew him for 5 years, but the memories are clear. I will always remember him for his exceedingly quick remarks and his hearty laugh and smile. Mrs Dighton was kind and gently. I will remember her for her generosity and sympathy for others.

The news of the tragic death of Mr & Mrs Dighton filled us with great sadness. Mr Dighton was an inspiration to my son during his years at Elmhurst and worked very hard with us in securing a place in Secondary School. He always had time for us and provided lot of encouragement. We will miss them both. Our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Mr Dighton and the staff at Elmhurst. May their souls rest in peace.

One of the hardest things we have ever had to do was phone our son at University to tell him of this tragedy. Ben greatly enjoyed his time at Elmhurst and Mr Dighton was the perfect Headmaster. He knew every boy by name and he understood them as people.

We are still trying to take in this very sad news and cannot quite believe that Mr. and Mrs. Dighton are no longer with us. They were two quite outstanding, dedicated and passionate teachers who made learning fun. Mr. Dighton gave all of our three boys a love for English and in particular for telling bad jokes! He knew all the boys in the school by name almost as soon as they started, and got to know every individual well, a remarkable achievement in a school of over 200 pupils. Our boys were all House or Vice Captains of Seddon (Anderson) and Mr. and Mrs. Dighton gave them confidence and belief in themselves. Mrs. Dighton taught all of our boys in Kindergarten and her calm and patient manner was greatly appreciated by us. May they rest in peace.

What a shock it has been to us all of the tragic and sudden death of Barry and Elizabeth Dighton. It is nearly two weeks and we still cannot believe what has happened to such a caring and amazing couple. I can still recall Mr Dightons words from his last ever speech at the christmas carol concert and his amazing rapport with the boys. His input in the school and the boys has been invaluable and will be sorely missed by all who came in contact with him. RIP Mr and Mrs Dighton. Our heartfelt condolences to the family and all the staff at Elmhurst

Mr and Mrs Dighton. I took in sorrow feelings as I heard this news. On this Day My Mum gave me memories. The easiest to remember was when he gave me a nickname of Chubby babes. I hope they rest in peace and my feelings will live with them forever.

We would just like to say how sorry we are to hear the sad news about Barry & Liz this week. Nicola & I were greatly shocked by the news and tragic circumstances. Matthew was only at the school for three years but he was very upset to hear the news. Like many I am sure, we are totally bemused by what could have happened for events to take such a tragic path. Matthew was very fond of Barry Dighton, who he held in such high regard, and respected immensely. In moving Matthew to Elmhurst at the start of Year 4, we consider it the best move we made in his education and that was mainly due to Barry’s influence on the school. Matthew is now thriving at Wilson’s in Year 8 thanks to the efforts of Barry and subsequently of Matthew Apsley, of course. He has very fond memories of his time at Elmhurst, and retains friendships with many of the boys who have now moved to different schools. This we feel sure, is in no small part due to the friendly atmosphere that Barry & Liz instilled in the school. Matthew & I regularly bumped into Barry & Liz at Selhurst Park and we spoke to them just a couple of weeks ago at a game. I had a season ticket for many years sitting just behind them in the Holmesdale Gallery before moving to the Main Stand when Matthew started coming to games. I know they were very passionate Palace fans and many fellow supporters will certainly miss them. Nicola and I had great respect for Barry from the first day we brought Matthew along to Elmhurst for an interview. It was hard not to be impressed by the man and the school. His enthusiasm for education and sport was infectious. Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time. Please also pass on our condolences to Charles South and the teaching staff. It goes without saying that if there is anything we can do, please let us know.

It is with great sadness that these have to be written. Mr s and Mrs D were well thought of. They never believed that a child could not learn. Their dedication to the children even after retirement twill be remembered and treasured. May you both rest in peace. Our hearts and thoughts are with the Dighton family. Their legacy will live on in the thoughts and minds of all those that were touched by these special people. All memories will be spoken with a smile and treasured by my sons Asher and Eugene

Barry, Liz and Elmhurst were a big part of our lives for many years. Barrys ascerbic humour (he needed it being a Palace fan!) and genuine care and concern for all at the school together with Lizs relaxed and warm hearted nature formed a great foundation for the education of all three of our boys. We enjoyed Barry and Lizs company as friends as well as parents at school and social events. That we will not see them again is, as everbody else is saying , truly unbelievable and the cause of their death desparately sad. Our thoughts are with all of those close to Barry and Liz . I was really sorry to hear about Mr and Mrs Dighton. Mr Dighton was an inspiration to us all. He was a brilliant teacher and was heavily involved in the schools sports. Mr Dighton would brighten our school day with his sense of humour and he did a wonderful job in making the school somewhere we enjoyed coming to. Mrs Dighton was also integral to the school helping settle the new students as a reception teacher as well as being helpful to all of the pupils around the school. My progress in life so far is a large part due to the foundations Mr and Mrs DIghton helped put in place when I was younger. Kindest Regards Muhammad

I was so very shocked to hear of the deaths of Mr & Mrs Dighton. My son Reis was a pupil there for only a few years but we took away such fond memories. I shall never forget the first day we met Mr Dighton as we walked around the school he would stop and chat with the boys and knew all of them by name. He was a wonderful man who truly loved the boys and they in turn respected him immensely. Mrs Dighton was a natural with the young boys always smiling. My heart goes out to all who knew this wonderful couple and also to Daniel, who I pray may one day find peace. Please do let me know if there will be a memorial as we would dearly wish to attend.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news. My Mother and I so looked forward to seeing Barry and Liz at school functions - the first topic of conversation was always Crystal Palace Football Club. Barry and Liz were so kind to us and Barry was always a friend first and a headmaster second. My thoughts are with everyone at this sad time.

Mr & Mrs Dighton, You died of the course you believed in, you died of LOVE. You were father to the fatherless, mother to the motherless. Always there, always available for ALL. You were a rare gem in the world we live in! Great fighters, great soldiers, great delight to have met you both in the journey of our parenting. None assuming, non judgemental, faithful, dedicated and loyal to the end. Sleep tight, sleep sweet until the bell sounds again when the dead shall rise. We love you still and will continue to love you. The vacuum of our hearts will be filled with the love you gave us while you were both able to give. We love you both but God loves you best, Sleep in the bosom of the Lord.

We would like to express our sadness at the passing of Mr And Mrs Dighton. They were Elmhurst and we have many happy memories, including Mr Dighton carrying Neville with his broken his leg into his first nativity play, aged 5, and cricket teas in the early evening summer sun. I know the huge influence they had on all the boys under their care and they will be sadly missed.
