8th place for Year 5 pupils in schools Maths Challenge

Elmhurst School for Boys

14th May 2015

On Wednesday 6th May 2015, Nyal, Vivek Sidharth and I, went to the Royal Russell School to compete in a Maths Challenge. We were really excited!

When we reached Royal Russell (in Mr Harrington’s car) we were split up with a different teacher from a different school. We were all excited as they announced that the maths challenge had begun. At the start, we all got a Royal Russell pencil as a souvenir with a Royal Russell rubber. We were put into groups with other schools and we had to work as a team in four different rounds. There was a written puzzle and a practical puzzle in each round. Some examples were:

The Cube
Abhiram and Nyal did a cube challenge where you had 16 different 3D shapes and we had to intersect the protruding cubes and put in all the shapes so there were no gaps and we filled up the box.

The Pythagoras Theoram
We all tried to figure this out. You had 2 scalene triangles, 1 square and 2 right-angle triangles. The first challenge was to use any shapes to fill the small square and the larger square. I was able to figure this out therefore we earned 5 points. But then we had to use all of the shapes to fill in the largest square which was tilted.

The challenges made us think quite hard as they were not only about numbers.

After we had finished the rounds we watched a Maths show which was really fun and we got to go up to take part in an experiment!

Finally we had tea in the Great Hall and the results were announced. We came 8th out of 20 teams but all the results were really close with 3 teams all having the same score for 2nd, 3rd and 4th places.

The afternoon was brilliant and we all rated it 5/5!
