Baa….

Elmhurst School for Boys

11th April 2013

My Principal’s Assembly was over at St Peter’s church this morning, and we started by looking for sheep.

If you look in many stained glass windows in churches – and indeed if you look in religious images from many faiths – you will see sheep and you will see a shepherd. Gratifyingly many boys knew what a crook is (the object I mean!). You can identify a character who is acting as a shepherd by whether he is holding a shepherd’s crook.

Why the imagery of shepherd and sheep? Well, we worked out pretty quickly that if we had wanted to herd a flock of sheep through the church, we would have needed a lot of help from sheepdogs and shepherds. And just like sheep follow (with difficulty) a shepherd, so followers or disciples of a leader in faith follow their master, but they often are tempted to go astray. Hence the pictures of and references to sheep so frequently in religious teachings.

We followed this up by listening to psalm 23 (‘The Lord’s my shepherd’) – a song of comfort to which everyone can relate.

On a separate note, I hope I have possibly given some respite to all Elmhurst mothers for Sunday. I encouraged the boys to realise that calmness, peace and quiet can also be a gift to mothers on Mother’s Day.

Don’t bank on it…!
