ISA London South Under 11 Basketball Champions

Elmhurst School for Boys

6th December 2013

Elmhurst School entered into the ISA London South Basketball Competition with no real expectations. Basketball is a popular playground sport and a Basketball club was held after school in the first half of the term. Basketball will also be covered in the Physical Education curriculum later in the year.

The selected boys were very enthusiastic about taking part and had been practising during break-times, over the past few weeks.

On arrival we discovered our opposition schools in our pool were: Bronte, Oakfield and Virgo Fidelis ‘B’ Team.

In our first match against Virgo Fidelis ‘B’, we dominated possession and scored six baskets in the short ten-minute game. Feeling confident after this 12-0 win in our opening game, the boys played Oakfield and again dominated the play. Tobi and Ethan were controlling the ball in offense passing it around the key, looking for that probing pass or the opportunity to shoot. James Benjamin was re-bounding every shot and shooting the second ball. Orson and Krishan came off the bench as seamless replacements in this impressive performance, leading to an 8-0 win for Elmhurst School.

The efficient GCSE students refereeing the matches were beginning to comment on the quality of play by the Elmhurst boys. In the final group game, we played Bronte who had looked like a good team in the matches that we had watched them play in the competition. Elmhurst, however were too strong for Bronte. They were the only team in the competition so far to score against us, but Elmhurst won comfortably in the end, 10-2.

This meant that we qualified for the final against the only other unbeaten team in the tournament; Virgo Fidelis ‘A’ Team. We knew that this would be a much greater challenge for our boys, but we entered the court in a confident mood. This match was much tighter than previous matches in the tournament. Virgo Fidelis had some big, strong players and they managed to score first. In fact they scored two baskets before we started to play in the way we had done previously. Ethan, Ewan and James began to control the ball in attack and we started to take some shots. James again, re-bounded brilliantly and managed to score. Ethan then started to find his range and scored from a shot from outside the key. With the scores even and the clock ticking down there were tense moments for the players and coaches alike. With only seconds left on the clock, Ethan put up a shot from distance. James and Ewan were in place for the re-bound, but the ball dropped into the basket leaving Virgo Fidelis with no time to respond.

Elmhurst School were awarded the trophy and the title of ISA London South U11 Basketball Champions! Well done to Ewan Watson, Sulaymaan Jamil, Orson Heath-Pampin, James Benjamin, Tobi Odusanwo, Krishan Shah and Ethan McIntosh.
