Revolutionary Forest School…..

Elmhurst School for Boys

24th June 2016 | Forest School

We have received some wonderful feedback from parents about Forest School at Elmhurst.

Read Amy Atkinson's comments below:

"Forest School is one of the most positive aspects of both my sons' educational and emotional experience at Elmhurst. As Education at the highest level of research and policy guidance moves towards placing greater value on problem-solving and enquiry, Forest School provides a perfect context and opportunity for these qualities to be nurtured in our boys. We are extremely fortunate at Elmhurst to have the opportunity for our children to experience the combination of this kind of outdoor experience with an academic focus and a nurturing, family orientated environment. This is not at all an easy balance of factors to achieve and Elmhurst does it so well. The experiences in Forest School are incredibly rich in terms of social interaction and bonding. One of the qualities which attracts people to Elmhurst is the warm,  close family feel around the school. That sense is seamlessly transferred to the forest and if anything, it can be felt even more intensely. It is genuinely moving and also deeply reassuring to see the boys working together as part of the Elmhurst Family. In the woods, the boys look after one another, engaging in exciting, shared endeavour, whether it be building a den, finding and identifying bugs or learning how to sensibly and safely manage risk around the fire. The forest removes the physical and emotional boundaries of the classroom and seems to somehow reset relationships, patterns of behaviour and even learning styles. Children (and indeed their parents and teachers!) dare to step outside their comfort zones, extending their learning experiences and with that, their confidence. New relationships are strengthened as children reach out to work with children with whom they may not normally work. It is very easy as parents to get stuck in limited and limiting ways of thinking about what constitutes education. Forest School is a rich and valuable educational and social experience, which can only help learning across the curriculum as skills in enquiry and investigation are transferred to other areas. "
