The Advent of calendars…

Elmhurst School for Boys

11th April 2013

Advent is here and calendar doors are getting opened every morning. There's nothing like a childhood Christmas.

When I was at prep school (in the pre-cretaceous period) I was a chorister in a cathedral choir, which meant that we stayed at school as boarders right up until Christmas day. I must say, I have never had such wonderful Christmases as those years. We got more and more excited every day, with services and parties and excursions leading up to the day itself. And the advent calendar was an intrinsic part of the fun.

But what was also part of the fun was the waiting, the anticipation. The preparation for the big day and the feeling that it wouldn't really be Christmas until the sun went down on Christmas Eve. Believe it or not, we didn't put up Christmas decorations until then.

I hate to be a 'Bah, humbug', but I feel uncomfortable with the ubiquity of chocolate advent calendars now. A chocolate every day leading up to December 25th. It feels wrong to me. We should be preparing for the day, not celebrating it early. At the very least, we should be thinking about the year we have had and how we can do things better in the future, be a better person, help others more.

Of course, there's nothing to stop you doing that anyway, advent calendar or not. But I hope we will all encourage our children to be grateful for what we have all received, and mindful of being better individuals for the future.

Notwithstanding my comments above - don't forget to tuck in at the EFA Christmas Fayre on Sunday...

Next time - more on why 'A Muppet Christmas Carol' is the greatest Christmas movie ever!
