U11 Cricket Team win Super Sixes Tournament

On Saturday 18th May, six of the Under 11 Cricket squad participated in the annual Super Sixes Tournament hosted by Caterham Prep-School.

We arrived and were quickly involved in a match with Lingfield Notre Dame. Each match consisted of five overs per innings, where each fielder had to bowl one over and the batting line up was required to be changed for each match. These rules enable all players to have bowled and opened the batting throughout the tournament. Any wicket lost resulted in the dismissal of the batsman and the loss of five runs from the team’s total.

We opened the batting with Roshan M, our Surrey player and Raul U, our Captain and District player. Roshan went on to score 50 and we posted a total of 70 with the loss of one wicket. Lingfield Notre Dame worked hard to try to reach our total but the loss of a few wickets to our excellent bowling led to a win in our first game.

We went on to play Reigate St. Mary’s and the hosts Caterham, winning both games to set up a deciding match against Hawthorns, who had also won all of their matches. We asked Hawthorns to bat first having won the toss. We were able to keep the run rate low in the first two overs. In the third over their opening pair started to hit the ball hard, scoring runs freely having ‘played themselves in’.

Raul took responsibility for the penultimate over. His first ball was hit for four. Raul responded with the wicket of the opener, clean bowled! The new batsman had to face three more balls in this over. Raul bowled and the new batsman struck the ball for a quick single. The next delivery was hit in the air. Our fielder was under it. He was out!

Hawthorns ended their innings on 29. We needed 30 to win the match and the tournament. Raul and Roshan walked into the middle to open the batting. In the first over we were cautious and our run rate was slow. As the overs went, our runs scored started to rise. Both teams were anxious as the last over was about to begin. We needed two runs to win and not to lose a wicket (minus five runs). By the third bowl of the over we had reached 29! We needed one run and if we were to lose a wicket in the last two balls, we would lose the match. The penultimate ball was bowled to Raul. He struck it and a quick single was scored. There was a block on a very decent delivery and we had held out to win the match and the tournament by one run in the final dramatic over of the day.

Well done to the six boys who fought for this victory: Raul U, Roshan M, Ethan M, Krishan S, Theo M and Joshua G.

Elmhurst will return next year to defend our title.
