Year 1’s Measurement Investigations in Maths

In Year 1, the children have been carrying out measurement investigations in maths.

In the first investigation they discussed how they could record how tall they were without using a ruler. They decided to use their hands and feet. The children drew around their hands and feet onto cardboard, then cut them out. Working with learning partners, they measured each other using these cut outs and recorded their findings on a bar chart. At the end of the lesson, we recorded everyone's measurements onto the Smartboard using a cloning tool.

In the second investigation, Mrs Prior measured around the perimeter of a square using a piece of string. She asked the boys which other shapes could be made from the same piece of string. The boys investigated this idea using string, paint and paper. They discovered that if they used two pieces of string the shape was bigger. Some boys extended their thinking by making pentagons; some boys found they could make triangles of different types using the same length string.

The aim of these investigative lessons is to encourage children to explore and develop mathematical ideas themselves, helping them to become inquiring learners.

At home: Carers can help the boys at home by looking at 2D shapes in their environment and comparing their perimeters.

Coming up, we will be looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, using the language 'flat' and 'solid'. We will be practising words with the 'ar' sound and looking at poems.
