Year 3 Harvest Festival

Elmhurst School for Boys

1st October 2015 | Key Stage 2

On Wednesday Year 3 led Elmhurst’s Harvest Assembly for the school and parents. The boys told us about how harvest is celebrated across different times and places, including the UK, the USA, Asian countries and Ancient Egypt. They made and brought in traditional decorations including fruit and flowers, which we have also used for learning about the life cycle of plants in science.

We have been measuring ingredients for different mixtures including salt dough to make harvest decorations, a mixture of salts to ‘mummify’ apples and finally dough for making bread which we enjoyed eating with break time drinks after the assembly. The boys  have learnt about how to measure in cups including fractions e.g. one third of a cup, millilitres and by weights of a kilogramme and half kilogram (500g). Through this work the boys have also begun to learn about division, fractions and doubling.
