Year 4’s practical Science experiments

In their Science lessons, Year 4 have been enjoying practical experiments, reflecting a new approach to the Science Curriculum, to make experiments more child-centred.

The boys have been looking at how water changes into its three different states - solid, liquid and gas - and have conducted experiments to see how they can speed up the process.

Year 4 used a data logger for the first time, to discover the boiling point of water and to discuss evaporation. They then used a metal baking tray suspended over a boiling kettle to observe condensation occurring.

Year 4’s new science display has also helped to remind the boys of the target vocabulary and to aid their learning of the processes between the different states of matter.

The benefits of conducting Science experiments like this, include improving independent and group working, allowing the boys to present their findings to others, and drawing their own conclusions from their investigations.

Teachers are also able to address any misconceptions as they might arise and can ask pupils to demonstrate their conclusions through evidence that they have seen in their experiments. This also helps to support wider learning and enables pupils to become more critical thinkers.

At home, parents might like to conduct their own experiments in a similar way. Parents could also review the target vocabulary on this topic - condensation, evaporation, freezing and melting.
