Year 5 Spelling and Maths

Elmhurst School for Boys

26th September 2014

Last week, our 5H/5P spelling duel started. The boys were matched with a duelling partner from the parallel class and the competition ensued. Nine boys got all spellings correct and the end result was a very narrow 12/10 victory to 5P. Well done boys.

In Year 5 Maths, our learning has been about the properties of numbers. Having already examined place value in larger whole numbers, we have started to partition decimal values into their tenths and hundredths, ordered them and looked at greater and lesser than values. Using ‘Decimole’ the children were able to identify the correct place values. We will be using this learning to help us to convert between vulgar fractions, decimal fractions and percentages.

At home: Working with your children to identify the values and place values within larger numbers up to ten-millions and decimal numbers down to hundredths, (or thousandths if they are happy), would be great to consolidate our learning.

Coming up, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of operations using decimal numbers along with some work to recognise the nets of 3D shapes.
