Year 5’s Forest School Adventures

Elmhurst School for Boys

23rd January 2014

This term, Year 5 have started their Elmhurst Forest School Project. The first session has brought Science alive in the woods.

Science specialist, Mrs Twyford has joined the boys and they have enjoyed learning about different leaf shapes, including the vocabulary 'serrated' and 'lobed'. The recently fallen trees have provided a valuable insight into their root systems as well as opportunities for sawing and then examining the life of the tree, through its rings (as well as some beautiful chopping boards to take home!).

Year 5 have shown some brilliant team work, especially in their construction of a tepee which required some serious knot tying, lashing and frapping. Elmhurst's passion for whittling continues, with Mr Clarke demonstrating how to whittle an elephant!

There has also been plenty of hot chocolate, thanks to the boys lighting the fires for the Kelly Kettles.

In the next session we look forward to Art in the woods with Mr Cater and making our own lunch over the campfire.
