Year 6 and Early Years enjoy their Buddy Lunch

Elmhurst School for Boys

19th October 2017 | Little Elms

Elmhurst has run a buddy system with Year 6 and pupils in Early Years, for many years now.  The reasons for this are many and the children at both ends of the school gain huge benefits from the process: the youngest through having the support of an older pupil to look up to and play with and the eldest children learn valuable responsibility in aiding a younger boy through modelling good behaviour.

Within this, the buddy lunch system helps pupils pick up many skills such as asking politely for food, using a knife and fork correctly; speaking politely to one another, making healthy choices and independently clearing away after oneself.

Afterwards, it is great to see the buddies at play, the eldest passing down their knowledge of games and how to get along with each other with problem resolutions. The eldest pupils therefore reflect on their own interactions with their peers.

Read some of the boys' comments about having a buddy:

"It's a good experience (being a buddy) because you need to learn how to look after them."
-Kaeleb, Year 6

"If my buddy Reyansh needs help, I will always be there for him."
- Kojo, Year 6

"I really like playing with Darsh because he includes me in his games."
-Aayan, Year 6

"We play games. He's good to me. He talks to me at buddy lunch."
-Liam, Reception

"We play monster games. He scares us. We like it! "
-Akash, Reception

"We go in the toy cars. He takes care of me."
-Alex, Reception
