Settling in to the new term

Elmhurst School for Boys

22nd September 2017 | Headmaster's Blog

The summer holiday is a time for family and relaxation and I hope you all had a wonderful time together. Term has begun, in earnest, and the Elmhurst Family are now together again. We have some new, very welcome additions to the Elmhurst Family and I am delighted to say that all of the new boys have settled quickly into life at their new school.

The new Reception boys have been enjoying the learning taught by Mrs Brown with the multi-sensory approach of ‘Continuous Provision’, directly supporting our ethos and vision. Reception have also gained their first taste of Forest School, with weekly sessions being taught throughout the first half of this term. I am a firm believer in the benefit of using the inspirational environment of the outdoor classroom for the extended development of many areas of the curriculum. Years 3 and 4 have also started their unit of work at Forest School and the boys appear to love their outdoor learning experiences.

We have already had three football fixtures with the U10’s A, B and C and the U9’s A, B and C teams playing against Royal Russell, and the U11’s A and B teams taking on Fairchild Primary School in an early season friendly. Although the results were mixed, these early friendly matches give all of the boys who want to be in the football teams an opportunity to demonstrate their footballing and teamwork skills, alongside their attitude when representing Elmhurst School, on and off the pitch, to Mr Venier before the competitive season begins. I wish all players and teams every success as the season begins to unfold. The U9’s A team will be participating in the very competitive Caterham Prep School Tournament next Saturday and win, lose or draw, I am sure the boys will all enjoy their experience and represent Elmhurst School in the right way.

Finally, clubs started this week and I am delighted that Harry Blain has joined us, offering his Multi-sports programme to boys in the Lower School. I am sure that HB Sports will enjoy a long association with the school in providing opportunities for our boys to develop their basic skills for a variety of activities. Ben Boyce and his well-qualified coaches at BB Soccer continue to offer a number of football skills clubs to boys throughout the school and the teachers will also be offering a variety of clubs from Cookery to Cross Country Running, Choir to Coding and many more throughout the term.

I wish the Elmhurst School community a great autumn term, where many opportunities to grow and develop will present themselves to your boys. The Year 6 boys have already taken their Mock and Eligibility exams and I wish them every success in their attempts to support their ambitions in securing places in their secondary schools of choice.

Good luck, boys!

Mr Padfield
