‘The Starry Night’  Paintings by Year 1

This term Year 1 has been learning about Australasia in our topic and art lessons. We looked at the night sky in New Zealand and in particular, the Matariki constellation, which is a very important part of the Maori calendar. This week boys have explored the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and “The Starry Night.”  They heard how he used to paint in a way that expressed his feelings about the world around him. We focussed on “The Starry Night” for which he used very thick textured paint in ‘swirly’ patterns to give a sense of movement. The boys used thickened paint with flour and salt to give it texture, and applied it using dots and swirls to recreate this beautiful painting.
