Year 4 Art : Exploring famous architecture around the world

Elmhurst School for Boys

9th February 2017 | Key Stage 2

This term year 4 have explored famous architecture from around the world!

We studied St. Basil’s Cathedral  in Moscow, Russia. St Basil’s Cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1552 to commemorate a victorious battle in which Ivan captured the city of Kazan. Not much is known about the architects behind the design of St Basil’s Cathedral although it is thought to have been designed by brothers Barma and Postnik Yakovlev. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible had their eyes gouged out after they had finished designing the cathedral so that they could design nothing so beautiful for anyone else. However, this is very unlikely to be true as Postnik went on to design several other buildings!

Year 4 used oil pastels and ink to recreate the cathedral. First we drew an outline of the cathedral. Then we used oil pastels to colour in each part of the cathedral in a different colour. We kept going until we coloured in each section. Then, very carefully, we painted ink over the whole page. Finally we scratched patterns into the cathedral towers.
