A Very Elmhurst Christmas: A poem by Mrs Skinner

Read our special Christmas poem 'A Very Elmhurst Christmas' written by our Nursery Manager, Mrs Skinner:

‘Twas the night before Christmas,
when all through the school.

Not a teacher was stirring,
cause we are no fools;

The stockings were hung
by Miss Carew with care

In hopes that Mr Padfield
soon would be there.

The children were nestled
all snug safe at home,

While visions of 11+ exams
danced in the gloam;

And Miss Payne in her kerchief,
and I in my cap,

Had just settled down
for a three week long nap-

When out in the car park
there arose such a clatter,

Annie and Clare ran out
to see what was the matter.

Away to the minibus
Randall flew like the Flash,

Tore open the doors
and said “More Forest School stash!”

The spotlights on the playground
of the new fallen snow.

Gave an appearance of order,
to the chaos below;

When, what to Mr Caters’ wondering
eyes should appear,

But Upper School parents
with a case of beer,

With an Uber driver booked,
so lively and quick,

He knew in a moment,
it was no trick.

More rapid than eagles
his students they came,

And he whistled, and SHOUTED,
and called them by name:

Now, RB! Now 1P! Now 2K and 2C!
On, 3S  On 3C! On 4D and 4O!

To the top of the school!
To the top by 6C!

Now run away! Run away! Run away all!

So down from the classrooms
the boys they all flew,

With arms full of books
and PE kit too.

And then in a twinkling,
I heard by the roof

A shout from the staffroom
I knew was no spoof.

As I drew in head,
and was turning around

Down the stairs Mr V
came with a bound.

He was dressed in his Games Kit,
from his hat to his mits,

And his clothes were all caked
with the mud from Old Whits.

A bundle of Rugby kit
was carried by Freddie,

He looked weighted down
but said he was ready.

His eyes on the trophy!
an end of year goal!

His tournament dreams
anything but a stroll!

Miss Prior had swim squad
all ready to go,

Though the bus was all
buried in the white of the snow!

Mme Hargreaves held tightly
on to a croissant

Saying “Anyone ready for a Frenchy jaunt?”
Mrs Mawanda said she’d

Yes, she’d go to France
As long as everyone promised to dance.

Mr Padfield spoke not a word,
but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings;
then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger
aside of his nose,

And giving a nod
out the door he goes!

He sprang to his Volvo
to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew
it was after dismissal.

But I heard him exclaim
as he drove out of sight…

Merry Christmas to all
and to all a good night!
