Assembly with Leon Bosch and life in South Africa during apartheid

On Wednesday, the boys in Key Stage 2 were incredibly lucky to be visited by a professional musician, Leon Bosch. Leon has had an incredible life; he grew up in South Africa during apartheid, and he shared with the boys some of the difficulties he and his family experienced whilst growing up in South Africa. He explained to us that he felt incredibly disheartened by the apartheid system and the way in which it segregated people because of the colour of their skin. He therefore left the country in pursuit of becoming a musician.

Since arriving in London, he has excelled as a musician and has been performing professionally for most of his adult life. He has even helped to record the theme tune for many amazing films, such as Batman and Harry Potter.

We were lucky enough to hear Leon play his double bass, which he told us is over 300 years old and worth more than the cost of the average UK house - quite a remarkable instrument! Leon was truly inspirational. He taught us all that when you believe in something, you should stand up for it. He also showed us the value of hard work, and explained that the more effort you put into something, the better you will be at it.

We are so grateful that Leon came to visit us. He was very impressed with all of the Elmhurst boys, particularly with their excellent knowledge of the world and their inquisitive questioning! Perhaps one day, some of the incredible musicians at Elmhurst will go on to follow in Leon's footsteps, and become professional musicians themselves.
