“Do fish have fingers?” Year 1 find out

Elmhurst School for Boys

Year 1 enjoyed a recent Science lesson, all about fish. Entitled “Do fish have fingers”, its aim was for the children to be able to identify the features that make a fish a fish, comparing them with other fish to see if the features vary and then finally, comparing them with humans. This is part of a series of lessons on animals, with a week spent on each group (fish, mammals, reptiles and birds).

We looked at three different types of fish; a red snapper, two milk fish and two golden pomfret. These were placed on trays of ice and the children were able to examine them, label them and draw their own carefully observed drawings. The lesson provoked a lot of interesting questions from the children; “How do fish breathe?”, “What are gills?”, “Do they have teeth?”, “Do they have tongues?” as well as comments about how the surface of the fish felt and the size of their fins.

Year 1 were interested to discover where the fish had come from, who had caught them and where they had lived.

Practical learning activities such as this have the advantage of making learning more 'real' for the children. Investigating real fish in this way, rather than drawings or videos, impacts on all the senses, embedding learning as well as making the lesson fun.

We have also used our Science in other areas of the curriculum. In English lessons, Year 1 have been preparing nonfiction books about their favourite animals and carrying out research. They have also used Science in their Maths lessons this week, sorting animals into groups using different criteria.

At home, parents may like to talk to their children about their learning and take them to the library.
