Elmhurst Competes in National Young Mathematicians’ Awards 2017

Elmhurst School for Boys

10th November 2017 | Key Stage 2

On Wednesday 8th November, a team of four Year 6 boys - Aditya T, Ethan C, Thushan P and Shravan G - represented the school in the first round of the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards. If successful in round one, they will progress through to the regional finals on Wednesday 29th November. The top five schools across the UK will then be invited to compete at the Grand Final to be held at the University of Cambridge.

Well done to the boys!

Some comments from boys who participated in the challenge:

"We arrived at the centre, buzzing with excitement and ready for the challenge. On that day we were up against two other local schools. We were presented with an envelope containing three very challenging ‘never before solved questions’. Eventhough we were quite nervous at the beginning, we put into practice what we learnt at the brain-ache club. Overall, we managed to complete all the questions using our excellent teamwork and communication skills and it seemed like a very successful day. Our parents and Mrs Neagu came to support us, which immensely boosted our confidence. Now we are eagerly looking forward to the oncoming competitions this year!!"   - Shravan G

"The challenges were about tiles that needed to be fitted into numbers. We were judged on our problems-solving skills and most importantly, our teamwork. Personally, I think we were well organised and worked well together. I think the teamwork skills paid off as it was clearly shown when we tackled all three challenges effortlessly. It was a great experience and was essential, useful and an extra boost for future maths challenges. I would like to thank the Mrs Neagu for enlisting us and preparing us with her time for this event and all the parents who came to support us throughout the round"  - Thushan P

“It was a really exciting experience trying to solve a problem/puzzle that no-one has ever attempted before, and working as a team made it more enjoyable as we could all contribute in different ways to find the solution."  -Ethan C
