As part of one of the strands of the School Development Plan at Elmhurst School, we have introduced various after school clubs to expand the pupils curiosity. In recent years, the importance of programming has become a subject of increasing international awareness, moving from the narrow domain of the “geek” to the broader world, starting as early as Primary Education.
It is especially clear that the ability to code is taking on an unprecedented level of importance. Programming hasn’t become this popular by accident. There is a growing understanding that knowing how to program is essential, especially for younger generations. Simply memorising facts is less and less relevant in a world where Google can satisfy just about any question in a matter of milliseconds; it is the technical skills that will enable children to succeed, and that set of skills must include programming.
microGeeks Club encourages young children into Computer Programming, Physical computing, Robotics and STEM activities at Elmhurst after school. At microGeeks club KS1 students learn basic concepts of computer programming using fun physical computing projects involving various sensors and motors. Lower KS2 students learn Advanced concepts of computer programming with various projects involving various motors and various sensors. They also learn Artificial Intelligence Concepts using Scratch Programming along with Physical Computing concepts and microbit Programming. Upper KS2 students started learning more advanced concepts in Robotics using EV3 Programming along with app development.
You can find some videos of various projects by visiting the microGeeks Facebook Page
