Forest School Adventures in Early Years

Here at Elmhurst, our Forest School programme provides all boys with the opportunity to expand their learning beyond the classroom and to explore their natural surroundings, bringing many benefits such as helping to develop problem-solving skills, initiative, co-operation and physical development.

Little Elms have had their first experiences of Forest School this term. After testing their resilience in the torrential rain of the first week, the boys enjoyed a bit of sunshine last week and made their own Christmas trees. The "muddy place" is a definite favourite with Little Elms and we look forward to many more adventures ahead.

Reception also had a wonderful end to the term at Forest School, when they saw Santa himself!

The boys were busy playing a Forest School favourite "1, 2, 3, I See You" (our version of hide and seek) when they heard some bells. This confused Reception at first as they weren't sure what it could be, but then the boys found an exciting trail of snow, which they excitedly followed. As they ventured through the woods, they kept hearing the bells ringing, then unexpectedly caught a glimpse of Santa. He had even left some special treats which Reception gobbled up quickly. Then, as a way to say thank you to Santa, the boys helped to fix his sleigh using various techniques. First, they rebuilt it using logs and then created a slingshot to help him get off the ground. The boys were also kind enough to cook some reindeer food (popcorn) and taste test it for Santa.

Here are some of the highlights from the boys:

Aryan K: "We found snow and then we found chocolate. It was exciting!"

Ezekiel: "I looked for some snow and we saw Santa riding past, I was happy."

Ethan: "We saw some snow trails, we saw Santa's red cloak and we all made a sleigh."

Rafe: "We ate reindeer food, it was yummy."
