Year 1 investigate flowers and roots at Forest School
How many woodland flowers can you name? Ask Year 1 this and they will tell you up to 8 different types!! All found in Littleheath Woods thanks to our very own flower detective Mrs West. The Council had told Mrs Mawanda that on this occasion we could pick just one of each flower as we were learning about them. If we learn about them then we can appreciate and conserve them, ensuring they are around forever for everyone to enjoy! So we all became nature detectives and set off on a long walk collecting and sticking them onto our amazingly beautiful book marks. We then studied the range of different root systems that these flowers use to suck up water. We then became flowers and used our own roots (plastic straws) to suck up our drinks. We looked at Mrs Mawanda's favourite roots: parsnips, carrots and potatoes which will be cooking on our campfire!

We have had a wonderful two weeks at Forest School investigating lifecycles and the parts of a tree, exploring, creating and working together using our Forest School Code of: Trust, Respect and Teamwork. Activities have included: close observation of tadpoles, blindfold 'trust your partner' games to meet a tree, collages of trees, whittling magic wands, making an extensive menu of mud delicacies, building teepees, hammocks, lighting fires and treasure hunts. All in the beautiful sunshine! How lucky we are!
