Guided Reading and Comprehension with Year 3

In Literacy lessons last week, Year 3 enjoyed working on their comprehension and also took part in Guided Reading sessions.

As part of their comprehension exercises, the boys have been working independently to read different texts, before answering a series of questions about what they have read. These exercises also allow Year 3 to mark their own work, using the comprehension cards.

Ethan (3C) said “First we need to read the information and then we have questions on the back of the card, about what we have just read.”

Self-assessment enables the pupils to identify the areas in which they can improve their own work and also allows them to work independently, at their own pace.

Ashvin (3C) said “I like marking my own work because I can see what I have done wrong and learn for next time.”

Guided Reading has been introduced across the whole school this year, expanding the opportunity for group work in Literacy lessons.

In small groups, Year 3 have enjoyed discussing shared texts and reading aloud together, as well as answering questions about what they are reading and exploring different elements of books such as glossaries, blurbs and index pages.

Taking part in discussions and group work in this way, allows the boys more opportunities to read a range of texts and they can now access a selection of fiction and nonfiction Group Reading books in the school library.

Aayan (3C) said “I really like Guided Reading, because it gives us a lot of information.”
