In sickness and in health

Elmhurst School for Boys

11th April 2013

Happy New Year to you all! But it’s not been a happy new year so far for my youngest children. The novovirus bug has hit them, and us, hard – though thankfully we’ve all finally recovered.

If you are a follower of teenage literature you will know that there is a craze now for books about dystopian futures. The standard plot is that some terrible thing will happen to the world (holocaust, plague, alien contact etc) and things will all turn out for the worst – and for the most part, teenagers have to survive in this new world by relying on their natural, innate abilities.

Well, I’m quite partial to a bit of dystopian future escapism, but for the most part I’m an optimist. Things generally seem to get better, incrementally, but with some unforeseen partially negative consequences along the way. What I can identify with, however, is the idea of the world being hit by a disease that it has no way of overcoming. Mainly this is because I’ve seen children take ages to get over this particular bug recently! But also because viruses are now able to spread globally in days or even hours, when in the past they would never have left an individual region.

I hope this won’t ever come to pass. The human race is remarkably resilient and adaptive. And I hope even more (to bring things back to ground) that those of our boys at Elmhurst who are so keen on science, will go on to develop this interest into professional scientific work, to help make the world a better place.

Have a good weekend!
