Jamie’s Virtual Reality experience at the BBC

Jamie G in Year 5 recently took a special trip to the BBC in London, accompanied by his mum and aunt, to talk about his great-grandad's experience flying Lancaster Bombers in World War Two.

In September 1943, during a bombing raid over Berlin, a BBC reporter by the name of Wynford Vaughan Thomas, carried out a BBC broadcast from Jamie’s great-grandad's plane. Whilst on this mission a German fighter plane was shot down, which was captured on the broadcast. Following the mission, Jamie’s great-grandad and the other crew members were awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross).

BBC Education has now made a Virtual Reality (VR) experience using the audio from that day in 1943 so that others can see and experience what Jamie’s great-grandad and the other men did, on that night.

Jamie and his family were invited to the BBC to trial the VR experience and to be interviewed, as well as enjoying a tour of BBC News.

Read Jamie’s account, below:

On September 3rd 1943, my great-grandad, William Charles Thomas Bray, and crew flew out to Berlin to carry out a bombing raid. The Lancaster Bomber, “F For Freddy” hid in the night sky. All of a sudden a wave of lights cut through the darkness; these were the Germans' searchlights. Skilfully, the pilot dodged all the bullets coming at them. The Lancaster shot through the display of fireworks as other less lucky planes got shot down. Miraculously my great-grandad shot down a German plane and victoriously, the Lancaster flew home.

On that night 22 Lancaster Bombers got shot down. That was the reason me, my mum and my aunt went to BBC. That was the best experience that I have ever had!
