Medal winning performances in Regional Athletics Championships

Elmhurst School for Boys

13th June 2014 | Sport

Elmhurst has just started its Athletics programme and so the challenge of the ISA regional championships comes at the beginning of our season.

17 boys from Years 4, 5 & 6 participated at this eagerly anticipated Athletics meeting at the track in Norman Park, Bromley.

The events included 600m, sprints and the traditional field events of Long-Jump, High-Jump and Cricket Ball throw. Also, in Year 6, James B attempted the Shot for the first time.

Our main successes came from our Year 4 boys. We were the only school of 17 taking part, to have two sprinters qualify for the Final. Maliq A achieved second place and a silver medal, with Asher L coming 4th. The Year 4 relay team won a very exciting heat where the final placing would be determined on the time that they recorded in comparison to the other heat. On this occasion, the Elmhurst team were beaten into 2nd place, but another silver medal gained.

Other notable performances were James B achieving 2nd place and a silver medal in his first ever Shot competition. Tobi O won his Year 6, 80m heat convincingly, only to discover that he had recorded the 7th fastest time and the top 6 runners run in the final. Tobi also won a bronze medal for his 3rd place finish in the high-jump. As a team we achieved a number of 6th place finishes as well as some very good performances in the heats.

Well done to all of the boys who competed in this highly contested event. The future of Athletics at Elmhurst looks very promising, judging by the performances of many of the younger boys.
