Miss Kasza-Martin completes her year of fundraising

What a year! The challenges I have faced this past year have been the most physically enduring and mentally testing I have ever put this poor body and mind of mine through.

Having lost loved ones to cancer in the last couple of years I decided to organise a 1920s Charity Ball and 1950s Dance, with the help of two of my best friends. The events raised over £6,500 for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. I had such a great time organising these events, knowing that the money was going to such a fantastic cause, that I decided to embark on a new challenge - The Twelve12 Challenge.

In 2017, I participated in and organised 12 charity events and physical challenges in 12 months, whilst aiming to fundraise £12,000 for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

I chose this particular charity as funds received go towards both research for a cure for cancer and patient care - a matter very close to my heart. My god father Lawrence Werth battled skin cancer for more than two years. He was an inspiration who consistently amazed friends and family with his stoic attitude and approach to dealing with his condition. Lawrence Werth passed away on August 19 at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, at age 57. I wanted to take on the challenge for him, my amazing Grandad and everybody else battling with cancer.

My year of fundraising has come to an end and I wanted to say a big "thank you" to all of the staff, parents and boys at Elmhurst for your fantastic support. I may have walked from London to Brighton, climbed the three tallest mountains in the UK, ran the Amsterdam half marathon, ran and biked through thick mud, sold items at car boot sales, trekked around London various times, ran workshops, organised a Hungarian dinner party and an Alice in wonderland ball (and more) but none of that would have been possible without you, your generosity and words of encouragement.

The Elmhurst community has supported my challenges in so many ways, from the children taking it easy on the days after my physical challenges, to the parents and staff attending and enjoying various fundraisers.

One example of unforgettable generosity was after I completed my third challenge ‘Mud and Mayhem’, an off-road duathlon in wet and cold March. One boy in my class donated some money and I wrote a note in his homework diary to thank the family for their generosity. The next day I received a reply from the boy’s mother explaining that she could not take credit and that her son had read my story on JustGiving and “he offered the money himself from his savings…birthday money he had saved”. I felt so lucky to be able to teach a boy with such a big heart.

After every physically challenging weekend event, my class have been incredibly supportive. The day after I ran the Amsterdam Half Marathon one boy said to the rest of the class “we have to be extra good today and let Miss Kasza-Martin sit down a lot because her legs hurt”. The boys saying little things like that was so special and really motivated me to continue my challenges and fundraising.

The Royal Marsden does fantastic work towards finding a cure for cancer and patient care and is the world's first hospital dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education. Your donations will truly change lives and your support over the past year has made a difference to so many people affected by cancer.

I am delighted that with your help, I have raised a total of £14,091! Thank you again for your generous support.
