“Moni” from Joshua Orphan and Community Care

As part of Elmhurst's 150th Anniversary celebrations, Madame Hargreaves and Miss Kasza-Martin are currently in Malawi, visiting Joshua Orphan and Community Care (JOCC) to volunteer and support the organisation with a number of their programmes.

This week, they have been working at the Daniel Feeding Centre in a small village, in the local area of Blantyre. The Centre supports children from the ages of two to six. Madame Hargreaves and Miss Kasza-Martin are helping the fieldworkers to develop their teaching skills. The fieldworkers work every day and are only paid £5 a month to support the children at the Centre. Every day, the children get a bowl of maize-based porridge, called Nsima. 

With Madame Hargreaves and Miss Kasza-Martin's support, the children are now able to have short conversations in English and enjoy a range of new and exciting activities. The fieldworkers have been taught how to set up free play activities and this week they had a go using Lego, bought with the amazing donations from Elmhurst staff and pupils, to help them with colours and counting.

Other resources bought with the money raised by the Elmhurst community, has already been put into action. The children in Malawi loved writing with their new pencils and they were thrilled when using their new parachute.
