Elmhurst announces new Reading Scheme

Reading is the key to the curriculum and at Elmhurst we take this very seriously. Therefore, we are pleased to announce our recent £5,000 investment into a new Reading Scheme.

Oxford University Press has a very comprehensive reading scheme that is aimed at providing a rich and varied reading experience for pupils, as it contains many different genres, well-known authors and classic books from our cultural heritage.

Our pupils will have 20 levels to explore, as well as supplementary books from our previous scheme. It's not all about reading through all the levels however, and parents should be aware that there is a rich range of reading to have at every level. The teachers will decide when it is time to move on through their regular independent and Guided Reading sessions with the boys. Pupils not only need to be able to read with 90-95% accuracy, but also be able to answer a range of comprehension questions that focus on a range of skills. This is why we advocate reading with your sons at home every day, and ask them a range of questions about what they have read.

Here's what several of our Year 6 pupils had to say about their new scheme:

"I'm reading Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. I am enjoying the book so far. It's really interesting even though I've only read 18 pages."
-Aditya T, Year 6

"I'm reading Shapeshifters, which has lots of traditional tales. It's really exciting as in one story a demon fox was chasing two men!"
-Daniel L, Year 6

"I'm reading Ruby P. Baxter which is set out like a diary. I'd recommend it because it's really funny and you can relate to the character of Ruby in some ways."
-Stanley I, Year 6

"Sixteen Sisters is a book with three stories. It's quite interesting because the characters do unusual things, like sneaking out at night."
-John O, Year 6

"I like the way the new scheme has new and challenging books to read. I like all the new words I come across."
-Alex M, Year 6

"I like the new scheme because there are lots of new levels and they are challenging, and I like a challenge!"
-Siddharth U, Year 6
