This term, Reception’s topic is all about ‘People Who Help Us’. We had a visit from a doctor who told us all about how doctors help us when we are unwell. Some of the boy’s even had the chance to use a stethoscope to listen to each other’s heart beating.
We then enjoyed a visit to our local Fire Station where the boys had a fantastic time learning about how we can stay safe at home and at school, and what we need to do in an emergency. The firemen also spoke about what their job is when they are called to a fire and showed the boys the equipment they use to put a fire out. The boys then had a chance to be a fireman themselves and had a turn at spraying the hose, which they all thoroughly enjoyed.

Last week in Reception the children were introduced to the concept of more than and less than. They were introduced to Mr Snappy who is so greedy that he always likes to eat the bigger number. The children were then able to draw Mr Snappy’s mouth to identify whether a number was more than or less than another number. The children then had fun drawing Mr Snappy’s teeth and eyes.
In our Literacy lessons the children have been using their writing skills to write about the adventure of a dinosaur. They have used their five senses to describe what the dinosaur did on his travels.
They have also learned the sounds, actions and formation for the letters ‘f’ and ‘b’.
At home, to support your son’s learning, you may review the formation and sound of all the letters we have learned so far. He is encouraged to practice writing for real purposes for example, writing a shopping list, or a card or letter to Santa.
Your son could also work at independently sounding out three and four letter words. Additionally, if you are out and about and see some numbers when you are walking or driving in the car, try asking your son which number Mr Snappy would eat and the reason why he would eat that number. This will help to consolidate what we have learned in class.
