Strong performances at U9’s Football Tournament

Elmhurst School for Boys

27th March 2014 | Sport

The Year 4 boys were very excited about taking part in the re-arranged Royal Russell Football Tournament on Saturday 22nd March. This event had been postponed from earlier in the term when the pitches had been waterlogged and as a consequence one or two schools were unable to participate on this new date. The tournament comprised of two pools - an A Team Pool and a B Team Pool.

Due to there not being as many schools attending, there was an opportunity for one school to enter a second team into the B pool. Elmhurst took up this opportunity enabling 20 boys to participate.

The B Team goalkeeper, Lucas H-P played for both B and C Teams and when they played each other, Royal Russell provided the C Team with a goalkeeper just for that game.

This friendly competition kicked off for the A Team with a very exciting 0-1 win over the hosts Royal Russell. The only goal of the game was scored with the very last kick! The B Team and the C Team also both beat the Royal Russell B Team.

The second game was against Hornimans who had drawn against Royal Russell in their first game. We also drew 1-1 with them, but were playing good, expansive Football. The A Team boys left the field after this game feeling confident and pleased with their overall performances.

The final game in the A Team Pool was against a very strong Lingfield, Notre Dame squad. They had already beaten Royal Russell and Hornimans convincingly and we knew that it would be a difficult last game. At half-time it was 1-1 and we felt that we had a good chance in the game.

Lingfield kicked off the second half and their talented centre-forward scored a great individual goal, dribbling past four of our players who looked tired and unable to affect the game from that moment on. The final whistle blew and the Elmhurst A Team had lost the game 3-1.

In the B Team pool it was going well for both our teams and at the end of the pool stage, both teams were on the same points at the top of the pool. Mr Vaneer decided that a penalty-shoot-out was the only way to separate the two teams.

After a very exciting six penalties the two Elmhurst teams could still not be separated and so they shared the honours in their pool. The A Team had come second in their pool.

Every boy took home a medal and the postponed U9’s Royal Russell Tournament was a very enjoyable experience for all of the Elmhurst boys.
