U10’s 7-a-side Football, Thursday 22 January 2015, 3.30 kick off
Elmhurst 7-0 Virgo Fidelis
Team: Oliver W (gk), Henry F (capt.), Maliq A, Andrew D, Seby O, Aarush W, Aqeel K
The Under 10’s football team have started 2015 with a superb performance against a strong Virgo Fidelis team. Oliver W (gk) and Andrew D (midfield) were drafted from the Under 9’s squad and given the opportunity to perform at Under 10 level and both performed well.
Mr. Padfield told the boys before the match that if they were to close down the Virgo Fidelis players quickly and use the space in our side on the wings, then we would have a chance to win the game. The players listened to the coaching points and carried out the advice right from the kick off. Virgo Fidelis are well known for playing with a well organised shape and system but they could not string their passing game together as the Elmhurst boys were brilliant in closing down the player with the ball early and forcing the errors. The first goal was scored by Andrew D as a direct result of this pressure. Virgo Fidelis tried to play the ball out of defence but lost possession with Andrew pressing from central midfield and he duly slotted the ball into the goal at the far post.
The Elmhurst boys dominated the first half scoring two more goals before half time. Seby O tapped in from close range from an Andrew D cross and Captain Henry F converted a penalty which was gained when a Virgo Fidelis defender handled the ball under extreme pressure.
Virgo Fidelis started the second half positively, creating two early chances one of which was saved brilliantly by Oliver W in goal and the other was thwarted by a superbly timed interception by Henry F. The scoreline was added to by a wonderful solo goal by defender Maliq A, another well taken goal by Seby O and two from our pacey right winger, Aarush W.
This 7-0 win against a school we have played against each season for many years now, represents a fantastic team performance with all players contributing effectively to the overall performance. The future looks bright for next year’s under 11 team.
