19th May 2017 | Key Stage 1
This term Year 1 have been learning about Australasia in our topic and art lessons. We looked at the night sky in New Zealand and in particular, the Matariki constellation, which is a very important part of the Maori calendar. This week, the boys have explored the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and “The Starry Night.” They heard how he used to paint in a way that expressed his feelings about the world around him. We focussed on “The Starry Night” for which he used very thick textured paint in ‘swirly’ patterns to give a sense of movement. The boys used thickened paint with flour and salt to give it texture, and applied it using dots and swirls to recreate this beautiful painting.
