World Book Day Celebrations

Elmhurst School for Boys

14th March 2014

Everyone had been looking forward to World Book Day with excitement and eager anticipation. The boys had been bringing in bags of unwanted books from home to exchange for book tokens to use at The Grand Book Swap.  They had also been busy creating costumes, bookmarks and book cover designs for the competitions. Mrs West was also busy creating the magnificent and wonderful Underwater World.

On Thursday 6th March, the school hall was filled with characters ranging from Shea as Mike the Mechanic to Miss Wilks as The Mad Hatter!  Raul, Tinkerbell (Mme Hargreaves) and Sherlock Holmes (Mr Kelly) had the tough job of deciding on the costume winners. Well done to Mr Bump (Lucas in Year 1) and the Dalek (Jayden in Year 2) as well as Aman in Year 4 for his wonderful Ghostbusters costume, along with supporting soundtrack! Well done to our staff winner too; Cruella DeVille (Miss Prior).

Throughout the day, classes visited the Underwater World and used it as a stimulus for some great discussion work and creative writing.  Each year group also visited the Grand Book Swap to exchange their tokens for new books.  Over 900 books were swapped on the day which was incredible. Thank you to all the families that donated books.  I am sure all the boys will enjoy their new reads.

In the Lower School, the classes rotated around various story-themed activities throughout the day, including making funny face books, a treasure hunt and baking some sugar mice.

Boys in Reception and Year 2 also enjoyed telling and acting out stories in groups.

Thank you to all the staff for putting together an exciting programme.

The bookmark competition was won by Ethan in 2W and the book cover design by Nishil in 5C. Some of the designs can be seen on display in the hall.

Thanks also to Oliver’s mum for coming in to share her story writing with Year 4. Oliver and his mum had written a story together following a workshop held on the South Bank during half term. She will hopefully be coming in again to read the next instalment in a few weeks.

A wonderful World Book Day was had by all!
