Year 1’s exciting day at the Science Museum

Elmhurst School for Boys

5th March 2015

Year 1 had a very exciting time this week at the Science Museum. We consolidated our learning on Materials and had a marvellous time up in the materials gallery, investigating the interactive displays with lots of opportunities for self-initiated hands-on exploration. Among the many highlights was sliding on our tummies across the glass bridge, finding a dress that was made of wire, learning what materials were best for making shopping trollies and  jumpers, gazing up at an upside down car and feeling lots of different textures with our hands.

After a lovely lunch we then went to see Amy Johnson's real plane. Wow! Did she really travel to Australia in something so small? What a brave lady! This followed on from our trip to Croydon Airport last week where we stood on the runway and imagined Amy taking off in 1930. This completes our topic on Croydon for History and Geography.

We then went shopping, which pleased the other customers(!) as we had to give the correct money. We hope the parents liked their presents!

Of course, the boys were beside themselves with excitement at travelling by minibus, tram and tube. This gave us the opportunity to look at Croydon and the surrounding area. There was lots of calculating about the number of stops on the tram and the train as well as sleeping on the way back!

We thought we could probably spend at least two days at the museum! There is so much to see but it is important to do 'little and often', so do go with your family. The Science Museum provides opportunities for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning enabling every learner to access something.
