Year 2 venture ‘Into the Forest’

Elmhurst School for Boys

19th March 2015

To tie in with our Creative Writing topic on books by Anthony Browne, boys in Year 2 took part in various story-themed activities in the woods this week. First, we retold 'Into the Forest', a story of a boy in the woods who meets lots of familiar characters from traditional tales on his way to see Grandma in her cottage. We put blindfolds on and used our other senses to imagine what it would be like to get lost in the woods, using lots of ‘wow’ words to describe our feelings. We then worked in pairs to guide each other along a woodland trail, taking turns to wear the blindfold. Some boys thought that it was scary to be without sight and just rely on another person to help us along the trail. We had to communicate well with each other and reassure our partner to help them to feel safe.

Afterwards, we split up into groups and carried out different activities based on the traditional characters that the boy met in 'Into the Forest'. Squire boys had great fun making mud cakes to give to Grandma. Scott boys used the loppers safely to cut sticks for whittling and medal making as part of their role as woodcutters. Anderson boys made their own beanstalk and zip wire using ropes and knots while Peachell boys built a den and garden for Grandma's cottage with ropes, tarpaulin and natural resources.

The boys had a fantastic time exploring the woods for the materials that they needed for their activities and thinking about how to use them in the best way for their project. They needed to use their team working skills to listen to each other's ideas and decide on the best course of action together. We are very proud of our creations.
