Years 3 and 4 become fashion designers

Years 3 and 4 have been studying the artwork of Sonia Delaunay. They learnt all about her life and her early work, before looking at her later work and how she had to change and adapt when World War One broke out.

At this time, the Delaunays had little money, and so it was here that Sonia began to branch out and use her artistic skills in ways other than painting. In 1918, she opened her own shop in Madrid called ‘Casa Sonia’ (literally translated as ‘House Sonia’) where she sold, amongst many things, coats, shoes, ball gowns, swimwear, umbrellas and jewellery, all of which she had designed herself.

Years 3 and 4 looked at Sonia Delaunay's designs and noticed that in all of the designs, you can clearly see the continuing influence of the Orphism branch of art, with her use of geometric shapes and bright colours. The boys created their own designs in the style of Sonia Delaunay, using bright colours and geometric shapes, before bringing the designs to life by putting their artwork on to t-shirts.
