Year 4 visit the Horniman Museum

On Wednesday 27 November, Year 4 went on a cross-curricular trip to the Horniman Museum to learn about African culture.

First we looked around the Natural History section of the museum and the boys were able to enjoy a fascinating display of exotic animals, including a life size walrus, a huge ostrich and much more. We also looked at a selection of fossils and skeletons, which consolidated some of our Science work this term.

We then took a trip around the aquarium where the boys were able to see a variety of marine species including fish, eels, crabs, lobsters, frogs and toads in a variety of environments including a 'British Pond', 'Amazonian Rainforest' and 'Mangrove Swamp'.

After lunch we had an African workshop where the boys enjoyed learning about a variety of African artefacts and objects, which they were then able to get their hands on and experience. They were able to use a variety of African toys and learnt about how they were made from recycled objects. They then had a chance to try on some traditional African headscarves and learn how to tie them. Finally the boys got the chance to play a wonderful variety of African instruments, including a mix of African drums.

The boys had a wonderful time and were able to learn a great deal from the experience of seeing different parts of African culture up close and being able to interact with them.
