In Year 6, boys at Elmhurst have the opportunity to take an English Speaking Board exam. The independently-assessed exam helps to develop and focus the boys’ skills in presenting, speaking and listening, in a formal context and is well-recognised by secondary schools.
Year 6 are currently preparing for the exam which they will undertake on 30th June.
For the exam, the boys need to research and present on a topic of their choice. They should include ideas and opinions and may also add visual aids, props and demonstration, or a PowerPoint presentation.
The next section is speaking by heart: a poem or a piece of solo drama. The boys also need to indicate the reasons for their selection.
The next section is reading aloud. Again, the boys need to indicate the reasons for selection and try to persuade others to read the book.
Whilst this process is going on, the boys will need to listen attentively and actively ask questions which demonstrate their ability to listen to the speaker and respond to the issues raised.
The boys are all excited about the prospect of getting a formal qualification and for the chance to hone their abilities in communication which will be so vital in their future lives.
