16th February 2016 | Key Stage 2
Aim:
Use maths in real life situations.
Our challenge:
Feed a family of four for a week with £80-£100.
Our trip to Sainsbury’s had to be well planned so we knew what to buy and how much it costs per item and altogether so we had to do maths work and calculations. We had to figure things out such as how much each item costs; what is better quality food and how much each item costs to the Kg for the vegetables.
When initially planning we found it impossible and did not know how much each item cost and then figured out that we had to spend £14.25 a day and £3.55 for every person per day. A task like that was really putting our minds to the test.
Then on the 2nd of February 2016 we actually did the shopping. We had to have a balanced diet so that meant an equal amount of meat (e.g. Lamb, Beef and Pork) vegetables (e.g. Carrots, Corn and Peas) and carbohydrates (Rice, Potato and Bread).
Finally, we came back to school and evaluated how well we had done. It turned out that we massively under spent by about £35.
This task has taught us that we can use lots of Maths in real life and we don’t always need to look at the cheapest item and we also need to look at the best quality items.
