A Culture of Positivity

Elmhurst School for Boys

The role of the 21st century teacher is complex and demanding. In supporting our boys and their families, we have a duty of care which requires us to be educationalists, counsellors and diplomats, whilst ensuring that all within our community are happy and safe. At Elmhurst, we do everything we can to nurture and develop cognitive abilities within an environment which promotes a culture of positivity.

A strong set of core values, which promote well-being and happiness, are paramount to a successful positive culture within our school. We all know and understand that happy pupils make for happy learners and in the 21st century world, well-being is increasingly being recognised as a vital component in the lives of today’s working population.

Intuitively, as any parent knows, children learn more effectively when their emotional needs are met. Happy, safe learners have better outcomes in school and in life. Essential to achieving this at school is a clear understanding of the importance of pastoral care. Given that the vision of our school is to prepare boys for the rigours and challenges of life in the 21st century through the development of cognitive skills and characteristics, our pastoral care system also plays an important role in the development and experience of a well rounded Elmhurst Boy.

There are many components to our pastoral care system. A restructuring of our Senior Leadership Team with a new Pastoral Lead, an immersive curriculum reflective of our community, the ‘Elmhurst Behaviour Choices’ devised by the School Council, our House system and strong relationships with class teachers, all contribute effectively to pastoral care here at Elmhurst. As part of our School Development Plan, we are focusing on “Valuing Individuality” as one of our key priorities over the next two years. Essentially, this will mean that all pupils will leave Elmhurst as resilient individuals, with a variety of wonderful experiences and ready to take on all of those aforementioned rigours and challenges.

Have a lovely Half Term break.
