A reflection on the Spring Term

Elmhurst School for Boys

8th April 2019 | Heads Blog

As the Easter holidays begin, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on another successful term here at Elmhurst.

As ever, our boys have enjoyed a great many experiences and achievements both in and outside of the classroom, ranging from Maths Week to Holi festival celebrations.

Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the entrepreneurial project, “Putting Young Minds to Work”, run by Stride Learning. The boys held their Enterprise Fair in the playground last Friday, offering their products to members of the school community. Year 6 have raised an impressive £350 from the project as a whole, some of which will be donated to the Joshua Orphan and Community Care organisation and some will be spent on playground resources, which the boys will be able to choose themselves.

Last week, we enjoyed two wonderful performances of Wind in the Willows, by Year 3 and 4. The boys all did very well in learning their lines and delivering them with confidence and passion, and the shows were enjoyed by all in attendance.

Last week also saw the boys in Upper School take part in a week-long online mental maths competition set by ‘Sumdog’. 683 classes across London entered the competition at the beginning of the week and 264 classes qualified for the final stage, including all of Elmhurst’s Key Stage 2 classes. When the competition closed at 8.00pm on Thursday night, we were delighted to hear that 5N had won the whole competition! 3S were 4th, 5V were 5th, 4O were 16th, 4D were 17th and 6C were 30th. Our Elmhurst Boys were fully engaged in the process and all performed extremely well. Four Elmhurst pupils have also qualified for the Pangea Mathematics Competition International Final on 4th May, with participants from across Europe, so we wish them the very best of luck.

We have enjoyed another action-packed term of Sports, which you can read more about here and I am delighted that our Computer Science curriculum and Physical Computing Club have also been going from strength to strength, providing pupils with the computer programming skills that will enable them to excel in the 21st century.

Looking ahead to the Summer term, I look forward to sharing the results of our recent Parent Survey with you, and to sharing many more experiences and achievements.

I wish you all a very happy and restful Easter break.

- Mr A J Padfield
