Developing well-rounded individuals

Elmhurst School for Boys

8th February 2019 | Heads Blog

Here at Elmhurst, we are committed to preparing boys for the 21st Century and ensuring that the learning experience is the best it can be for each and every pupil.

We are proud of our wide-ranging learning initiatives and curriculum programmes which enable this to happen, as well as our ongoing framework of review, allowing us to maintain high standards of teaching and the consistent delivery of inspiring lessons.

Here are just some of the ways that we develop well-rounded individuals who are fully prepared for the challenges of the future:

Outdoor Learning

We believe that outdoor learning is vital for the education of boys and this is reflected in the rich outdoor curriculum at Elmhurst. Regular Forest School and other outdoor learning sessions are enjoyed by all year groups, providing the perfect opportunity for each pupil to develop the characteristics and skills required for the future, such as critical thinking and collaboration. Whether it be designing and building a bivouac or collecting leaves for identification and grouping, these experiences encourage a reflective approach to learning and the boys are constantly being challenged to work together and think about how to solve problems, by making links to other areas of the curriculum.

Inspire Maths Programme

Our Inspire Maths programme is embedded in the curriculum across the school. The programme follows a mastery approach to learning and enables pupils to progress independently with their learning and gain an understanding of mathematical concepts that will benefit them for many years to come. You can hear what some of the boys think of the Inspire Maths programme here.

Curriculum enrichment in Year 6

For our Year 6 pupils, our rich curriculum has been extended further with the introduction of our inspiring Stride programme, providing real-life opportunities to learn about business and entrepreneurialism. Boys in Year 6 are also able to develop their presentation and public speaking skills through the English Speaking Board Examination. One of our pupils was even selected as a Young Speaker of the Year finalist, last year. These opportunities enable the boys to be fully prepared for the challenges of their future education and life beyond.

We take great pride in the young men that our pupils become, at the end of their time with us and our consistent record of offers to notable Independent and Grammar Schools at 11+ is a true testament to the way in which we nurture each individual.

As our current Year 6 pupils have now completed their senior school entrance exams, we wish them every success and look forward to celebrating their achievements later in the term.
