Elmhurst at 150 Years Old

Elmhurst School for Boys

25th January 2019 | Heads Blog

Here at Elmhurst, we identify, nurture and celebrate the talents of each and every boy, in an inspiring environment which blends innovation with tradition.

It is my strong belief that Elmhurst School has been identifying, nurturing and celebrating the talents of each and every boy for many years. Old Elmhurstians include authors Tom Sharpe and P.G.Woodhouse, Cabinet Minister The Rt. Hon. Lord Freeman, the Bishop of Woolwich Rt. Rev. Colin Ogilvie Buchanan and Polar Traveller Dr Michael Stroud, OBE. Other distinguished and successful alumni include actors, servicemen, sportsmen, musicians, inventors, presenters, diplomats and the former Chief Education Officer, Simon William Geoffrey Jenkin, who left Elmhurst in 1953.

The boys attending Elmhurst today, have tremendous opportunities through our innovative curriculum, Forest School and our ever-evolving Sports programme, with its links to South Croydon Sports Club for Tennis and Badminton, Langley Park Girls School for Hockey, and Beckenham Sports Club for Squash. Elmhurst has long had connections to Whitgift, Trinity and Royal Russell and we have been using their swimming pools for many decades. Our association with Old Whitgiftians, where we deliver all of our games lessons and play all of our fixtures, goes back to 1900 and beyond. There is a photograph in the entrance hall of the school’s main reception, of the Elmhurst Under 11 Cricket team playing on the old ‘Croham Fields’ in the season of 1901. Now Old Whitgiftians, Elmhurst boys have enjoyed many wins, losses and draws, games lessons and Junior Sports Days in this inspirational, beautifully maintained and wonderful setting for sport.

We are now known for ‘Preparing Boys for the 21st Century’, which means that we work hard to develop the cognitive skills of Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity, alongside developing the characteristics required for success in the 21st century; leadership and adaptability, and pupils that are motivated, self-starters and global citizens. Elmhurst has a long tradition of producing fine, confident and ambitious young men and as long as we continue to provide the boys with opportunities to be inspired to discover their talents, we will continue to nurture them and celebrate their successes, for many years to come.
