This is the time of year when parents and teachers begin to think about the beginning of the end. In Little Elms, I am sure a few of you are thinking about next year and whether your son is ready for the new challenges of Reception. Rest assured, the answer is YES!
Using the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, we ensure that each boy is reaching and in most cases exceeding his milestones. Observation is the starting point and through observation we look, listen and note what your son is doing or not doing as the case maybe. Looking at the observations closely, we move onto the assessment stage.
Analysing the observations and deciding what it tells us about each boy is a very important part of what we do as practitioners in Little Elms. Having our small class size allows us to give better individual attention to all the boys. Knowing each boy and being able to guide, support or push forward, means that the Little Elms are secure with the learning in their age phase.
Finally, we move on to the planning stage. We always plan for the seven Areas of Learning, making sure the Prime Areas are targeted first. Planning is how we decide on the experiences and opportunities in our learning environment, planning carefully our resources, routines and what role the teachers will play in the boys' learning for the week.
At the end of the week, the process begins again for next week. Sometimes we will revisit a certain Learning Intention but most of the time we are able to move forward. This constant cycle of observation, assessment and planning means each boy in Little Elms will be ready for their next steps in their educational journey. So, relax and enjoy the Easter break. I know Miss Payne and I will. For further parental investigation into the Early Years Foundation Stage, you can visit https://www.foundationyears.org.uk/files/2014/08/EYFS_Parents_Guide-amended.pdf
