Head’s Blog: Easter Holiday

As we break for the Easter Holidays I am reflecting on the year and the term we have had. It has been very ‘different’ for all and many have been affected by the pandemic in different ways. Teachers and families have had particular stresses and strains on them in providing a continuity of education throughout. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and to congratulate all parents, pupils and teachers for managing the boys’ education over the last year. Incredibly, the vast majority of Elmhurst Boys managed to make good progress throughout this period of time. It is clear from our data though, that we will need to focus on writing through the rest of this year, however our Year 6 boys have achieved incredibly well in a year when the challenges could not have been greater. 90% of boys who took the Independent Schools Examination Board (ISEB) exam were offered places in the independent schools of choice and 35% of Elmhurst Boys achieved a scholarship offer. Well done to all of our Year 6 boys and we wish you every success in your future academic endeavours.

It has been fantastic to see all of our community back together again and despite the restrictions in place we have been able to deliver Forest School, which we know the boys love, and some House sporting events. This has brought back some of the ‘normality’ which we are all craving. Some of the teachers have had their first Covid vaccinations and slowly but surely we are coming out of this year long experience, which I am sure we do not want to repeat anytime soon. We are so looking forward to the summer term where restrictions will be lifted further and hopefully the sun will be shining. The boys are looking forward to some Cricket and Athletics and other outdoor activities such as the annual Sports Days and the Years 6 end of year Shakespeare production, performed in the woods at our Forest School site. Year 6 will also enjoy the STRIDE ‘Putting Minds to Work’ enterprise education project as well as developing their speaking and listening skills through a project delivered by Mr. Cater. These are all aspects of the enriched curriculum on offer to the Year 6 boys once they have finished all of their exams, to support the development of their 21st century skills.

In the meantime, I am sure we are all looking forward to a break, I know the teachers are as it has been exhausting this term. In fact, there is much to look forward to in this break as the restrictions around visiting other families in their back gardens and the ‘Rule of Six’ returns. The timing of which is perfect for the celebration of Holi, the Hindu festival which marks the end of winter and beginning of spring, as well as the Easter celebrations in the Christian Calendar, both of which would bring people together, under normal circumstances.

Please stay safe, look after yourselves and enjoy family time together.
