Head’s Blog: Lockdown 3

We made it!

Half-term has arrived and the boys, teachers and our Elmhurst parents have all worked hard to make sure that the boys received quality continuity of education throughout ‘Lockdown 3’. The date of March 8th remains the Government target for reopening and so all of our planning is working towards that date. We will be in touch in due course regarding the way in which we are going to achieve this.

Thank you to all of you who participated in the Healthy Body and Healthy Minds challenges over the last two weeks. It has been fascinating to watch the boys’ videos of their Healthy Body or Healthy Minds activities. As you know, the subject I have taught for much of my career has been P.E. I am therefore acutely aware of the impact of exercise on keeping your body healthy but it is true to say that regular physical activity also has a positive impact on keeping your minds healthy too. Having spent so much time with our eyes fixed to screens for our online learning, it is equally important to spend some time outside in the fresh air walking and playing games with your family members, throughout the half-term break. I look forward to hearing all about your socially distanced half-term activities when we all return.

It is Chinese New Year today and I would like to thank Liam and Joshua Nai for helping me to make a short video on the kind of celebrations they would be having yesterday, today and over the weekend in celebration of this important event in the Chinese calendar. During normal times, the world’s largest human migration would take place as hundreds of millions of people make their way to celebrate with family in China. Things will undoubtedly look different this year, because of the ongoing pandemic. Nonetheless, the holiday will still be celebrated in the world’s most populous nation and by millions of people of Chinese descent all over the world. I love the fact that the Elmhurst Community is so rich with diversity and that we are able to learn about and celebrate the important cultural and religious festivals of a vast variety of backgrounds which are represented by our ‘Elmhurst Family’.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who have participated in the school Parent Survey. This is hugely important in reflecting the opinions of our families in a year which has been especially challenging for all. This survey will provide us with a platform for future strategic planning. I have been overwhelmed by the number of emails from parents which reflect the gratitude felt towards us as a staff team for the hard work in delivering online learning. It really is wonderful and very much appreciated to receive such positive feedback and helps to support staff morale in these unprecedented times.

Have a great half-term and remember to get some exercise!
