On Wednesday we had our first STEM afternoon. STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths; yes it is a mouth full! Allowing the Little Elms to explore these challenging areas enables them to ‘Think Critically,’ which is a characteristic of effective learning. We began the session with Mrs Jay reading ‘Welcome to Alien School.’ The boys love this story and it’s a great story for expanding their imaginations’. In the story, Albie’s Mum drives him to the wrong school, in outer space. But how did Mum's car fly? This is where the boys plan using their own ideas.
I put out a variety of plastic cups and masking tape on one table. On the next table I set out straws and practise golf balls. On the writing table was plain paper and pens and finally on the computers we had a car creator program. For the next 45 minutes the boys remained focused on the task at hand. They planned, explained their ideas and solved problems. Unfortunately, I was so focused on them and what I was seeing that I forgot to take photos!
If any parents are interested in STEM activities they can do at home, I recommend a visit to Pinterest.
