Little Elms learn about their five senses

Elmhurst School for Boys

19th October 2017 | Little Elms

For the last two weeks of this half term, our Little Elms have been exploring their five senses as part of their 'All about me' topic. The boys have had lots of fun with all the different activities we have set up around the classroom. By having lots of opportunities to explore different activities the Little Elms have been able to immerse themselves in the topic and as a result, their understanding is that much greater.

In the first week we made sound tubes, which we numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. We used our listening sense to guess which number tube was being shaken. We also made smelling bottles with different smells for our noses. We then went on a texture hunt in the classroom. Each boy was given a texture word. We talked about how the texture might feel. The boys then traced over the letters and drew a picture of something that might feel like that texture. I then let the boys walk around feeling things and finding the texture themselves. We then stuck the texture to the word and created a feeling wall. I then put the tubes and bottles next to the feeling wall so the boys could continue the activities independently.

In the second week, we shifted our focus to taste and sight. In our Monday cooking afternoon we tasted lots of different ingredients - some the boys enjoyed and some they didn't. We also made some glitter shaker bottles. All the boys helped by adding food colouring, glitter, baby oil or water. The hypnotic quality of a glitter bottle is amazing. If you would like the recipe to try at home, please come and see me.

This half term has been full of learning and fun and the boys have settled in beautifully. They come in happy and ready to learn, which is all I could ask for. Have a wonderful half term holiday, everyone and rest up, the push to Christmas is to come!
